Nature is beautiful, but it can be unforgiving. For hikers and campers in North America, encountering a bear is a real possibility. But did you know that reacting the wrong way can be a fatal mistake? Most people think all bears are the same, but their behavior is worlds apart.

The Golden Rule of Survival: To stay alive, you must memorize this simple rhyme used by expert rangers: “If it’s brown, lie down. If it’s black, fight back. If it’s white, goodnight.”
1. The Brown Bear (Grizzly): “Lie Down”
Brown bears are massive and incredibly strong. Most of their attacks happen because they are surprised or protecting their cubs.
- The Strategy: If a Brown bear charges, do NOT run. They are faster than Olympic sprinters. Instead, Lie Down on your stomach, cover your neck with your hands, and play dead. Once the bear realizes you aren’t a threat, it will usually leave.
2. The Black Bear: “Fight Back”
Black bears are smaller but can be more predatory. If a black bear is following you, it’s not scared—it’s curious or hungry.
- The Strategy: Never play dead. Stand your ground, make yourself look as big as possible, and scream. If it attacks, Fight Back with everything you have. Aim for the face and snout.
3. The Polar Bear: “Goodnight”
The “White Ghost” of the North is the most dangerous predator on Earth. Unlike other bears, Polar bears view humans strictly as food.
- The Strategy: In the Arctic, survival without a firearm is nearly impossible. They are patient trackers and will hunt a human for miles. This is why residents in these areas never walk alone without protection.
The Silent Cries of the Wild It’s heartbreaking to see how a lack of knowledge leads to tragedy. Every year, beautiful souls are lost simply because they didn’t know these three simple colors. We believe every life—human and animal—is precious, and understanding these giants is the first step to co-existing.
